The Challenge
ElectraNet is South Australia’s electricity transmission service provider, responsible for delivering high voltage power across the state. ElectraNet is firmly committed to its vision of “Energising South Australia’s Clean Energy Future”. Delivering on that vision requires not only clear intent, but also the careful development of the systems, processes and capabilities needed to embed sustainability across the organisation.
ElectraNet operates a large, linear network spread across a diverse range of climate zones throughout South Australia, from coastal areas to arid inland regions. This creates a complex operating environment when assessing climate-related physical risks and considering the potential impacts of different climate scenarios on assets. Assessing the potential effects of climate change on ElectraNet’s business requires translating credible climate science and scenarios into practical insights that can inform risk management, strategy and financial considerations.
The Solution
ElectraNet’s relationship with 2XE began with a focused need – guidance on Scope 3 emissions quantification – and has grown steadily from there. Over time, the engagement expanded well beyond its initial scope. 2XE supported ASRS climate disclosure preparation, with particular focus on scenario analysis and the qualitative financial effects narrative (assumptions, limitations and interpretation). Net zero target development and land-use based emissions estimation were also central to the work. Alongside this, 2XE provided technical advisory support across a range of ESG questions as they emerged.
For ElectraNet, working with a local South Australian firm mattered. The ability to meet face to face, have the 2XE team on-site during workshops, and build genuine working relationships with internal stakeholders made a meaningful difference to how the work landed inside the organisation.
Key work streams included:
- Scope 3 inventory development – building a compliant, detailed, and improving inventory as a strategic foundation for future target-setting.
- Climate scenario adoption and interpretation – supporting ElectraNet to adopt credible scenarios (IPCC SSPs and related sources) and translate them into practical, stakeholder-ready narratives for qualitative scenario analysis.
- ASRS disclosure uplift support – supporting ElectraNet’s finance and sustainability teams to develop and evidence the qualitative financial effects narrative and scenario-linked interpretation within the Strategy section.
- Internal capability building – translating sustainability challenges into cost, operational implications and financial exposure in language that resonates.
The Experience
“2XE offered practical ways to approach our sustainability challenges, they were able to provide expertise on practically any ESG question we had. They always provided insights, and they had an in-depth understanding of regulations and were able to apply it to our business.”
What distinguishes this partnership is consistency. 2XE has delivered over time, across a growing scope of work, because they genuinely understand ElectraNet’s business. That’s the kind of relationship that develops when technical depth meets a real willingness to go beyond the brief.
The Outcomes
- A detailed Scope 3 inventory designed to improve in accuracy and completeness over time, providing the data foundation needed for meaningful target-setting.
-
Strengthened ASRS disclosures through improved scenario interpretation and a clearer qualitative financial effects narrative (assumptions, limitations and how outputs are used), supporting internal review across finance and sustainability.
-
IPCC-aligned scenario narratives tailored to ElectraNet’s context to support consistent qualitative scenario analysis across internal stakeholders.
-
Stronger internal understanding of climate risk framed in terms of business cost, asset impact, and financial exposure
-
A platform for ongoing improvement, not a one-off report, but a growing capability embedded across the organisation
Proof Point
A long-term technical partnership has given ElectraNet the foundations to report on climate with confidence and the capability to keep improving.
The Most Effective Climate Partnerships Are Built Over Time
For organisations navigating ASRS compliance, Scope 3 measurement, and climate risk assessment, particularly those with complex or unique asset bases, the value of a technically strong, genuinely collaborative partner cannot be overstated.
