The Challenge: Turning a 2030 Net Zero Commitment Into Site Level Action

Blackmores is a natural health products company with a manufacturing facility in Braeside, Victoria, with a public sustainability strategy and a commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2030.

For a manufacturer with process heat requirements, turning that commitment into practical action is complex. Reducing emissions is not just a matter of setting a target. It requires site-level technical analysis, credible modelling, a clear understanding of operational constraints, and the ability to turn feasibility work into funded, implementable projects.

Blackmores has worked with 2XE since 2018 to support its emissions reduction and sustainability goals. That work has spanned emissions modelling, sustainability strategy support, technical investigations, energy and water efficiency assessments, and ongoing support to decarbonise site operations.

2XE helped Blackmores develop the initial modelling behind its 2030 net zero target in 2019. Since then, 2XE has partnered with Blackmores on a Victorian Government-supported hydrogen feasibility study, heat pump feasibility studies, water efficiency work, energy efficiency measures, LED lighting upgrades, and trigeneration removal and upgrade support.

The goal was clear: move from clean energy ambition and feasibility assessment into practical decarbonisation projects that could reduce emissions at site level.

The Solution: ARENA Funding Support for an Industrial Heat Pump

Most recently, 2XE supported Blackmores on an application to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency for the installation of an industrial heat pump at Blackmores’ Braeside manufacturing site.

The project involves replacing one of the site’s natural gas hot water boilers with an electric heat pump, helping to decarbonise process heating and reduce reliance on natural gas.

2XE’s role built on years of site knowledge and technical work. Because the team already understood the Braeside site, Blackmores’ emissions reduction pathway, and the practical requirements of process heat decarbonisation, 2XE was able to help translate feasibility work into a strong business case and successful funding application.

Key workstreams included:

  • Emissions reduction modelling to support Blackmores’ 2030 net zero commitment
  • Site-level technical and feasibility assessments, including hydrogen and heat pump investigations
  • Energy and water efficiency opportunity identification
  • Supporting the development of a business case for process heat decarbonisation
  • ARENA funding application support for the Braeside heat pump project
  • Knowledge-sharing support linked to the ARENA-funded project

The Experience

“Blackmores has enjoyed a successful partnership with 2XE since 2018. They bring a depth of engineering expertise that is highly complementary to the engineering and sustainability capability within our business. The team is highly responsive and always delivers. Nick keeps us informed of evolving market insights and grant opportunities which has enabled our clean energy strategy to be dynamic and adaptive as we progress our commitment to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2030.”

Sally Townsend, Head of Sustainability, Blackmores

What set 2XE apart was not only technical capability, but the continuity of the partnership. 2XE brought engineering expertise, practical site knowledge and market insight, while also identifying grant opportunities that helped Blackmores keep its clean energy strategy active, adaptive and connected to implementation.

The Outcomes: $700,000 in Co-Funding and 25% Less Gas Use

  • Successful ARENA application for an industrial heat pump project at Blackmores’ Braeside manufacturing site
  • Approximately $700,000 in government co-funding secured for a $1.4 million project
  • A practical pathway to replace one natural gas boiler with an electric heat pump
  • Expected reduction of approximately 25% in natural gas use at the Braeside site
  • Stronger connection between Blackmores’ net zero strategy, technical feasibility work and funded project delivery
  • Knowledge-sharing opportunity to help inform broader industrial heat pump adoption across manufacturing sites and sectors

The project marks an important step in moving from strategy to implementation. For Blackmores, it demonstrates how targeted technical work, strong site understanding and the right funding pathway can turn decarbonisation opportunities into investable projects.

Proof Point

2XE supported Blackmores to develop the business case and a successful ARENA funding application for a $1.4 million industrial heat pump project at its Braeside manufacturing site, securing approximately $700,000 in government co-funding and supporting an expected 25% reduction in site natural gas use.

Turning Clean Energy Strategy Into Funded Implementation

For businesses with net zero commitments, the challenge is often moving from ambition to action. Feasibility studies, emissions modelling and opportunity assessments only create value when they lead to practical decisions, investable projects and measurable emissions reductions.

Blackmores’ work with 2XE shows what that pathway can look like: a long-term technical partnership, grounded in site knowledge, that helps convert clean energy strategy into funded decarbonisation projects.

If your business is looking to reduce operational emissions, build a credible decarbonisation pathway, or turn feasibility work into a fundable business case, 2XE can help you move from planning to implementation.
